July 2, 2019 was an insane day in Jerusalem. Coming home from Tel Aviv I ended up in the middle of an ultra-orthodox protest blocking one of the main intersections of the city. I was told that the demonstration was against the arrest of a youth who refused to be enlisted into the Israeli military. Later, after working 2 hours, I wen’t outside into a second protest, just down the street from the first and also blocking the main highway. This second demonstration was by the Ethiopian-Israeli community (and others in solidarity) against police brutality towards their community – in particular the shooting to death of an Ethiopian youth just one day before by an off-duty police officer.
Suddenly, in the middle of all this begins a massive fireworks show by the US Embassy celebrating the 4th of July. The celebration was two days early because State Department employees have off for that day.
