Why did King David choose Jerusalem for his Capitol?

Jerusalem has no natural resources or port, and it is not located on an international transportation artery. So why did King David choose it as his royal capital? What unique features gave the city such a central role in coalescing the Israelite tribes into a united monarchy and making Jerusalem the eternal capital of the Jewish people?
