As Israel prepares to mark its annual Memorial Day, the list of fallen soldiers has been updated with the names of 59 servicemen and women who have died since last year’s commemoration.
The additions to the list were announced by the Defense Ministry’s Families and Commemoration Department, bringing the total number of soldiers who have died in Israel’s wars and other military operations to 24,213.
Memorial Day, or Yom Hazikaron in Hebrew, is a day of remembrance for the men and women who died while serving in Israel’s armed forces or as victims of terrorism. It is observed each year on the day before Israel’s Independence Day.
Israel’s Memorial Day begins Monday night with a one-minute siren across the country at 8 PM. On Tuesday morning, a two-minute siren will sound at 11 AM ahead of national memorial ceremonies at the country’s military cemeteries.
The updated list will be read out at official ceremonies across the country.
